Cows

We have two Highland Cows, Hamish and Heather. We love our Cows and we are certain you will too! Make sure you say hello on your next visit!

Here are some facts about Cows

Cows only have one stomach!
Contrary to popular belief, cows actually only have one stomach, however it is divided into four compartments, these are called: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and  abomasum.  This allows them to be able to digest grains and grasses effectively.

How much can a Cow see?

Cows have almost full panoramic views, they can see 330 degrees, although their vision directly in front of them isn’t great, which is why they turn their heads to look at you.

Do Cows smell?
Cow have a excellent sense of smell and can detect odours up to 5 miles away.

What Do Cows Eat?
Cows are herbivores! They eat grass, vegetables, fruits, leaves and bark.  Their favourite food is hay and fermented grains called silage.  Cows do not have top teeth, instead they have a rough leathery surface over their gum called a dental pad.

What Do You Call A Baby Cow?
The name for a baby cow is “Calf”.  Calves can stand and walk on their own within an hour of birth. New-born calves typically weigh between 65 and 90 pounds.

Can cows go upstairs?
Yes! They are capable of walking straight up stairs, however, coming back down is another matter entirely. Cows knees bend the wrong way making it impossible for them to come down stairs.  Thankfully, we don’t have any stairs at the farm.

How long do cows live?
Domesticated cows live on average 15-20 years, although dairy and beef cows rarely make it past 6yrs.  The oldest recorded cow was named Big Bertha and she died at 48yrs and 9months.

Heather and Hamish are our photogenic highland cows!

They are the first animals you will meet as you enter the farm, and will happily take all your animal feed from you if you let them.

You might even get to see Hamish showing off his skills going through the cattle crush.
