Planting Trees for the Jubilee

This year, the whole country celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee; she became the first British Monarch to celebrate a 70 year reign. The team here at Nunny’s Farm decided it would be a great idea to get involved in as many ways as we could, including offering tea and crumpets on each day of the Jubilee Bank Holiday, and participating in the Queen’s Green Canopy.

What is the Queen’s Green Canopy?

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative created to commemorate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. Individuals, schools and communities from across the United Kingdom are encouraged to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

‘Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girl-guiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.’

Planting Sustainability

The QGC has a focus on planting sustainably and will encourage the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which benefits future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

How Nunny’s Farm got involved

Here at the farm, we planted 20 trees as part of the Queens Green Canopy 2022 to create a woodland so we can deliver Forest School sessions.

Forest School is a child-centred program that provides opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It’s a long-term program with a focus on play and guided exploration, as well as risk-taking. The Forest School approach develops confidence and self-esteem through learner-inspired hands-on experiences in a natural setting.

How does this type of learning help?

Forest School is a learning environment that helps children develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. It creates a safe, non-judgemental nurturing environment for learners to try stuff out and take risks. Forest School inspires a deep and meaningful connection to the world and an understanding of how a learner fits within it, something that resonates with the Nunny’s Farm team very much, and a learning environment that we want to promote.
